Apple Air Pods 3 Review: All you need to Know

Air Pods 3

The Apple Air Pods 3 are the latest true wireless earbuds (TWS) in Apple’s Air Pods lineup. Launched on October 26, 2021, they include a slew of improvements that elevate them above their predecessors, the Air Pods 2.

However, if you include the Pro line, they are no longer Apple’s newest buds. That honor now belongs to the recently released Air Pods Pro 2. These are the brand’s most recent noise-canceling earbuds, which are a significant improvement over the Air Pods Pro in terms of functionality and audio performance though slightly higher priced.

With the Air Pods 3 at our disposal, we put them to the test to see if these earbuds are any good at all. Let’s get into it.

With their all-white minimalist style, protruding stems, and slightly curved contours, the Air Pods 3 maintain the same design language as earlier Air Pods models. This gives them a more streamlined, attractive appearance for everyday users.

The stems have touch sensors that are easy to operate with just a slight tap or squeeze of the stem. You can control your music playback, and accept or end calls without digging inside your pocket to remove your phone.

The controls are extremely responsive, and the small ‘click’ sound assures you that your touch has been registered successfully.

The Air Pods 3 are extremely comfortable, due to their lightweight (4.28g) and their smooth, contoured shape that doesn’t irritate smaller ears. They are built to handle a little sweat when working out or when caught out in the rain, all thanks to the IPX4 rating that prevents splashes of water from damaging the pods and the case too.

Upon opening the Air pod case, you can see a small LED light on the front that illuminates: green to indicate the Air Pods are fully charged, amber if there is less than one full charge left, and white if the Air Pods are ready to pair with any closed device. Overall, the Air Pods 3’s design is vastly superior to that of their forerunners.  They are classier, subtler, and stronger too.

The audio quality of the Air Pods 3 feels far better than that of their predecessors. According to Apple, the pods have new low-distortion drivers and high dynamic range amplifiers meant to offer “powerful bass with crisp, clear high frequencies”

The new earphones produce a more robust, warmer sound than the Air Pods 2 and are undoubtedly better at transmitting bass frequencies making them a perfectly good listen for music or podcasts.

The Air Pods 3 have an additional feature: Spatial Audio support. Apple’s Spatial Audio technology applies directional audio filters to 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos content, resulting in sound in a 3D sphere. This makes the audio feel more immersive as if it’s coming at you from all sides. This feature previously worked with the Air Pods Pro and Air Pods Max only.

This Apple product has  acoustic mesh covers on the outer beamforming microphones, with the main purpose being to reduce wind noise and improve the clarity of your voice. During our test, we called a few recipients using the Air Pods 3 and they all reported that our voice was clear and that there was no background noise.

The Air Pods 3 are designed specifically for use with Apple devices, with a one-touch setup that pairs the buds with your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or MacBook.

Another feature included in the Air Pods 3 is audio sharing. This means you can use your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple TV to share the audio stream between two pairs of Air Pods, Air Pods Pro, or Air Pods Max. If you want to share your music without sharing your friends’ dirty earbuds, this is a very useful feature. This feature worked fairly well for us, though we did notice a volume drop when sharing music with a friend.

The Air Pods 3 have an improved battery life, with a maximum battery life of up to 30 hours (six hours from the earbuds and another 24 hours from the charging case).

According to Apple, the buds themselves can provide up to six hours of listening time or four hours of talk time, with four additional charges from the case. If you’re in a hurry, a five-minute charge will provide approximately an hour of playback. The Air Pods 3 come standard with a wireless charging case that is compatible with Apple’s MagSafe ecosystem.

The original 3rd Gen Air pods 3 starting price in the Kenyan market ranges from Ksh 28,000 – 35,000 depending n where you choose to buy it from. The Air Pods 3 are the most affordable Air Pods that support Spatial Audio, and it’s well worth experimenting with music and movies. They are ideal for use with iPhone due to features such as Audio Sharing, Announce Notifications, and find My network. Lastly, wireless charging is included with the Air Pods (3rd generation), and they are MagSafe-compatible.

The only drawback to the Air Pods 3 is that they don’t come with ANC, and the semi-open design means the passive noise cancellation isn’t particularly good – if that’s a deal breaker, consider the Air Pods Pro.
